Sohcom qualify as Lightpointe trainers

All of Sohcom’s engineering team have now been fully accredited to install and maintain Lightpointe products.

Sohcom are also able to offer training to VAR’s that wish to conduct their own installs

September 2011 Update

We’ve had a hectic few months here at Sohcom and sales continue to increase.  We’ve successfully migrated our Free Space Optics business from MRV to Lightpointe and have been very impressed with the products and support we have received from them.  Our first few deployments have gone very well and our customers are very happy indeed!

 

Our sales of the Identity Networks Guest Manager have also been steadily increasing, having been accepted onto portfolio by BT iNet.  BT have deployed their first few systems now and are very happy with the results so far!

The highlight of the past few weeks for us has been the start of some BDUK projects for Wireless Broadband delivery.  We have been working on some of these projects for over 18 months now so its good to finally get some underway thanks to the recent government funding.  We have selected the Motorola Canopy 430 system as the base for our networks, a decision backed up by Gartner when consulted by a recent customer who was considering inferior ’802.11n’ based WiFi equipment.  We continue to be impressed by the capabilities of the Canopy 430 equipment and, based on recent results, are looking to deploy PMP cells in rural areas of at least 4km in diameter offering 10mbps connection speeds to villages currently unable to receive any broadband!

High Speed Laser Links – rapid deployment!

Sohcom have completed two high speed laser links for our reseller partners this week, both on very short notice.  The first was for a local authority in the South that needed to replace a failed Cisco WiFi link, the second was for a school that  had a fibre link cut by builders on site.  Both were mission critical but our resellers were able to call on us to react speedily and have both links back up and running in a couple of days.

Motorola Launch First Licensed
Point to Point radio!

Motorolahave now formally launched their new PTP800, a full licensed point to point radio capable of providing speeds of up to 364mbps FULL DUPLEX!  The 800 joins the existing WiBB family of products and gives Moto resellers even more choice when it comes to meeting the bandwidth requirements of their customers.

So what?

Licensed wireless links offer extremely reliable, high bandwidth, full duplex, secure wireless links under the protection of an Ofcom licence. Moto have spent a great deal of time preparing a product that addresses the demands of the modern network environment, focussing on reliable IP connectivity.  Many of their competitors have legacy products designed for ATM/STM networks adapted for IP. Perhaps most important is the price, and Moto have been aggressive on that front meaning they meet their competitors head on with great value solutions.

The catch!

So what’s the catch? Well, isn’t there always one?  Moto have prided themselves on having fantastic, easy to use, easy to install wireless solutions in the current PTP family (300/500/600). Moto AVARs have enjoyed great success installing these systems up and down the country with relative simplicity.  However, the skills and experience required to design and implement any licensed solution are a good few steps above those required for unlicensed work, especially with a product as easy to use as the current PTP range.  New tools are needed, engineers need to be retrained, new survey techniques must be employed and a much higher quality of installation is needed to ensure a succesful deployment. There is no “point and shoot” with licensed products!
